Casserly's latest mock draft has Upshaw going in the mid 2nd. He has short arms and small hands. His athletic numbers (shuttles, 3 cone) are poor as are his explosion numbers (broad jump, vertical leap). He has a low wonderlic and apparently has some character concerns.

OTOH watch him play in Alabama's big games (not highlights) and you would take him in the top half of the first. Assuming he's available at 28 would you guys take him? Where would you play him?

Upshaw received lukewarm reviews from scouts at his pro day but I still think he will go in the first round based on his productivity from last season. I would take him if he was available at 28 and I believe he would be productive at OLB.

Why don't you register as your OLD#4 ID? I must be losing my touch. It took six posts to ID you this time.

That's funny Jack. I'm sure if you were sitting across from Ol at the poker table, you would eat him for lunch.

OLD would play any ace, any suited cards and any pair from any position.

Any time you get a real hand, just sit back and let him do the heavy lifting. His ego will not allow him to fold.

RE Upshaw:

He’s supposed to be one of the best pass rushers coming out this year. If you’ve got a shot at a guy like that drafting from a weak position like 28 – well, titles are won by taking risks.

He never really dropped into coverage much but scouts have mixed feelings on his abilities. Some feel he’s got the instincts to do OK, others feel he lacks the athletic ability to cover well. Bishop took a lot of heat coming out of college for his lack of coverage ability while Hawk was supposed to excel in this area.

He’s got a domestic abuse charge against him, but apparently he was involved in an argument with a girlfriend in a location where the police happened to be. Both parties dropped the charges immediately after the arrest.

Right now the big concern is his weight gain from the combine to his pro day. Not very bright on his part, but it’s something he’s probably done every year in the offseason. There’s really nothing in his past to suggest he will show up at camp out of shape. The guy has a reputation for being a hard worker who plays his best football under the bright lights.

It’s interesting to see if he’s available in the low to mid 20’s. If your Thompson, do you make a move with the first and second to trade up for a player who fills a need? Or do you sit and wait to see if you can snag him with your 28th pick?

I’ll spare the utube hightlights, but IMO, the risk/reward definitely tilts in this guys favor. Someone like Neal flashes at the combine, but what do you think of his play on the field? Bishop falls to the sixth round because of his number ‘liabilities’, but he’s a player.

I agree Jack. I would go with the film which says first rounder. Other character and work ethic concerns have come up in meetings with him and his coaches according to PFW. I wouldn't trade up but I would take him at 28. He played big in big games.

Thompson can afford risks. He’s got three picks in the fourth round, which is a area of the draft he’s shown success with in the past. With a total of 12 picks, (four mandatory) he can move around to select prospects in middle and late rounds.

He’s got to have the confidence that he can select three solid starters in the draft based on his track record and the strength of his scouting staff. His draft position is terrible and based on the teams success, it’s going to be terrible for the next few years.

He can fire a bullet on a risky pick early and then potentially make up for it later in the draft with some solid devolpmental picks later. Fans scream about Harrell and Neal ( like me), but that’s part of his game.

Playing it safe will not generate another title. It will reproduce the Favre years of 2000 onward.

I didn't read the PFW reports. I don't have to - you read and write on them.

Making me lazy guy.

"Bishop falls to the sixth round because of his number ‘liabilities’, but he’s a player."

That is why I like Kendricks. I've watched most games Bishop and Kendricks played and Kendricks is a much faster version of Bishop who can also play outside. Same kind of instincts. Same kind of sure tackler. He can blitz and has the speed to cover tight ends. I'm not sure where he is going to go, probably mid 2nd to mid 3rd because he is short.

This from PFW:

The following quotes are from NFL executives, coaches and front-office personnel, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

• "The more Courtney Upshaw talked (in the interview process), the more I got scared. He has a lot of distractions in his life. There are a lot of concerns there. We need an edge guy, but we wouldn't touch him in the first (round). I'd have hesitations in the second where we're picking, after hearing him talk about grabbing his girlfriend by the hair."

WOW, just wow. Absolutely WOW.

As far as upshaw, when I read his reviews by the so-called experts one name springs to mind, Dwight Freeny. We all know how that turned out. If he is there at 28 then Theodore should take about the length of time it takes to fill out the card and run it the hell up to the podium. Be as easy is it should have been when selecting Aaron Rodgers.

Am I a fan? Yes I am and dude can play football!

I agree WSS and I think someone is going to throw out the measurables and take him before our pick. I don't think Feeney is a comparison though. Feeney was a great athlete who was drafted as a 4/3 pass rusher. The only thing in common is that both are about 6' 1". Brandon Graham is a better comparison IMO. He was supposedly falling because he didn't have a position, then Philly traded up to the number 10 spot (IIRC) and took him as a 4/3 end. Graham tested better than Ingram though. The main question remains, does Ingram have the lateral agility to play LB in the pros. He played great in college, but even in the SEC most of the guys he played against won't be in an NFl camp, much less make a team.

Valid points lutzz though as I recall Freeny was essentially assailed as "nothing more than a pass rusher" by his critics and I hear the same thing about Upshaw. He may need work in coverage, but I think he can play coverage in the NFL to at least a passable level.

But Feeney was drafted as a pass rusher. In Dom's system he would have to do much more. I would take him at 28, but it's a risk.

I read an interesting stat refernenced in an article that studied the 15 drafts between 1994 and 2010 and it concluded that 52% of the first round picks in that span performed better than players selected at the same position later in the draft. Interesting and really ilustrates two things, one what a total crap shoot all of this is and two, how important it is to be good good in the later rounds as much or more so than the first.

It is true Freeny was drafted as a pass rusher and so will Upshaw, yes he will be asked to do more at OLB than DE in a 43, btu I believe he has the athleticism to do it as well as the character to work his ass off to become a great player.
