March 13, that is odd that all player contracts expire that day. I would guess that is due to some fallout from the Lockout/Strike. I can not recall but is the 2012 season adding games and they need to do the new signings to compensate for the extra game(s)?

Flynn is a free agent at this point, if TT acts aggressively, look for him to slap the franchise tag on Flynn and then trade him. I am not sure what we can get for Flynn but I am thinking his numbers are decent and there is a real shortage of quality QBs in the league, at least half of the league is crappy IMO.

Maybe we can get Peyton Manning?????????? Only kidding, although I am not sure that getting Peyton Manning in a coaching spot (groom him for an Offensive Coordinator slot?) would actually be a bad idea. Plus Peyton is the only Manning I would actually hit the brakes for before hitting him with the car. But Eli and Archie, I would stop after I hit them and put the car in reverse, I hate those two ass clowns.

I believe the 2011 contracts expiring in conjunction with the start of free agency is business as usual. This allows the teams to have exclusive negotiating rights with the players in the timeframe between the end of the season and the start of the new league year. Matt Flynn for example can not negotiate with anyone except GB until that day is reached, and for other teams to contact him would be tampering.

Flynn is a interesting case for sure but I think the franchise tag is out for him. The 14 mill number would hit the Packers cap the moment he signs the tag tender, something he would do right away. That 14 mil number would also transfer with him to his new team as a starting point in negotiations which may scare off some suitors. With Finley and Wells likely in negotiations to be re-signed before they hit free agency they will immediately count against the 2012 cap and the team would hamstring themselves with that 14 million number alloocated to Flynn. The Packers have an estimated 116 million in 2012 obligations currently and with a estimated adjusted cap of 130-131 only have a total of 14 mil available until they start cutting players. Driver and Clifton being cut would free up 10.7 mil, and a Collins retirement would bring an additional 5 mil but his status is not expected to be known until late March and the Flynn decision has to be made by March 5th..

There is a slight possibility that the Packers could find a team to trade Flynn to, one that he would be agreeable to, and sign him to a more reasonable contract than the tag number, and trade him when the window opens. Alot of speculation that Miami, Seattle and Cleveland (all with Packer connections in high places) might be interested in such a deal and that would bring more than a compensatory pick would but there is alot to be worked out to get that done. If Peyton is released and is able to continue his career he would vault right to the top of FA quarterbacks and would be the #1 target for teams reducing somewhat the market for Flynn the free agent. Everybody (including me) expects Drew Brees to be retained by the Saints before he hits FA but if negotiations go sour there he could also affect Flynns value.

I think unless a non-tag sign then trade deal could be worked out that The packers will let him go to free agency and hope he gets a huge deal that would return a 3rd round comp pick in 2013. A top 100 pick would not be a bad return for a 7th round pick who earned just rookie deal money during his time here.

Brandon Marshall has a very high opinion of Flynn. I wonder if Miami would be a trading partner or whether they would gamble on signing him as a free agent.

There was a report in the Sporting News by Thomas Emerick on 1/28 that Marshall has reached out to Flynn and is excited about the possibility of Flynn playing in Miami.

Thanks Jack, that worked perfectly.

I as begining to think I was an idiot, okay a BIGGER idiot than usual. That site though, sucks in terms of ease of navigation. Not like I am not somewaht internet savvy ya know?

As for a marriage between Marshall and Flynn, well marshall has not shown himself to be the most level headed fellow in his career. It seems liek a fit from the Philbin point of view though I do expect that the Dolphins will be a major player when Peyton gets his inevitable release from the Colts and Flynn is not going to go there if that happens since he has earned a shot as a startign QB in the league.

Wherever Flynn lands I h ope it is a good fit from a scheme and coaching merge.

Thanks again Jack for the help.

I seriously doubt that Manning will receive medical clearance to resume his career and Flynn is well versed in the west coast offense.

He has already received medical clearance to resume his career. Where are you getting that information from?

His doctors have told him that structurally he is sound, what is up in the air is how long/when the nerves will regenerate enough for him to function fully as an NFL QB. Thsi has in fact been widely reported in many places.

I heard that his nerves may never regenerate enough for him to regain his previous arm strength. It would be foolish for him to jeopardize his health just to squeeze out a few more seasons.

That is what is being reported with respect to the nerves, but they either will or will not regenerate to their previous levels and it has nothing to do with endangering his future health-wise.

You stated that you "doubt that Manning will receive medical clearance" when in fact he has already received that clearance.

There is a distinct difference between the nerves regenerating which adds no danger to his football playing future, but rather his effectiveness as a player and getting medical clearance which he already has.

Even if he has medical clearance it would make no sense to continue playing if he has reduced effectiveness due to the nerve issue unless he just wants to do it for the big money.

That does not addres your statement that you "doubt that Manning will receive medical clearance"?

No one would doubt that Peyton is not going to go out there and play if he is not capable of playing to a level that meets his satisfaction, of course. That is however, a much different situation than not having received medical clearance which he has already received.

As much as I hope that a trade is involved for Flynn, I think the greater possibility would be TT standing pat, letting Flynn go, and "gamble" that Flynn plays well enough (and gets signed for a substantial contract) to warrant a 3rd round comp pick. Desparation by the other 31 clubs is required to get more than a 3rd comp in my opinion. Ted thanks for the rundown and the financial numbers involved as our Forum's capologist! Twisted Evil

Gentlemen, glad to back and get caught up on this site again. We had a good week down in Florida and had a great day at the Kennedy Space Center and WDW. The Space Center was pretty impressive with some fine exhibits, in particular the IMAX presentations of the Intl Space Center and Hubbell used to view distant stars and galaxies. I came in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Now its less than 24 hours to the Super Bowl.....finally after the Sham Bowl (aka Pro Bowl).

If you take a look at the Packer defense of 2011, the one thing we can all agree on is they could use some upgrades at certain positions. The criticism has ranged from DE to OLB to ILB and most certainly, the secondary. As Capers, McCarthy and Thompson meet, the wish list is probably longer then a 15-1 team would normally have.

I doubt I’m alone in thinking Thompson will make some aggressive moves to correct the flaws. With the team depth, he can freely trade up to acquire players. If some of the older players are cut this off-season, he can make some moves in free agency. [More on free agency in a later post]. The goal will be to put a title contender on the field.

But looking at Thompson’s history, don’t expect it to come together in 2012.

Look at the 2006 player acquisitions. Based on the team’s accomplishments, he had a good year. The draft yielded AJ Hawk, Greg Jennings, D Cooledge. Free agency netted Ryan Pickett and Charles Woodson. All five started on a Superbowl winner. Spitz would have been right in there except for his back injury.

He also found B Chillar, J Jolly and Will Blackmon. These three helped take the team to the NFC championship game in 2007.

But the immediate impact of these players didn’t exactly overwhelm. The club needed to win it’s final four games of the year to finish 8-8 on the season. It took a year for everyone to jell together and roll to the 13-3 record.

Thompson was very aggressive in the 2009 draft – Raji and some question marks and Clay III was only a one year starter in College. Both of these players were heavy contributers to last years superbowl win. But it also took a year to come together. Raji was a part time player in 09 and Clay had a slow start. Remember the hamstring injury in camp that had posters comparing him to Justin Harrell?

It took a year, but again the pieces jelled and the Packers won a title.

I can see Thompson making some aggressive moves in the draft. It certainly will be more difficult this year then in 09. A starting position of 30 in the draft is considerably weaker then starting with the ninth pick. This year he needs to find a pass rusher. But it might not be for a player that’s on everyone radar. Perhaps someone who needs to be coached up for a year. High on potential, but not ready to contribute immediately.

A linebacker, DE, and a DB - Perhaps a ILB as well. Pretty long list to cover in that sentence. Don’t be surprised if they materialize, but need some time to sort it all out.

Thompson’s a patient guy. Fans might need to temper there expectations for a year and be patient as well.

Jack you said the "Fans might need to temper there expectations for a year and be patient as well." I think that will be very difficult. We've become spoiled in the past few years and the fans won't understand or accept anything less than a deep run in the playoffs and/or another SB win. The next thing you know it will be 2008-2009 all over again and people will be pissing and moaning while calling for the heads of TT and MM.

Realism is not what fans specialize in. Well MOST don't, but some of us do in fact place a premium on realism.

Thaty said, fix the defensive problems and this team has the talent and ability to go on a run, maybe 3 of 4 even. It is possible, this team is that talented. I realize that does not sound realistic, but really, why not? Last year was not doen in a vacuum. It had that look and feel of a championship team down the stretch that this one did not. That, "chemistry" if you will, was lacking down the stretch this year and it means the difference between a first eround flameout and a title, ask the Giants.

You beat me to it Denver! Razz

Seriously, I don't think we have to worry about getting out the pitchforks because TT has all his players in place and should definitely address the pass rush issue on a team that can make deep runs for the next several years. Having ARod gives the Packers at least 5-7 years for a good run. Look no further than the Colts without Manning for a year.

We've become spoiled in the past few years and the fans won't understand or accept anything less than a deep run in the playoffs and/or another SB win. The next thing you know it will be 2008-2009 all over again and people will be pissing and moaning while calling for the heads of TT and MM.

I’m starting to look at it a little differently. Lombardi was obviously one of the greatest coaches in the game. But I have misgivings about his GM abilities.

Look at the state of the team when he left for Washington. Older players, a coach he selected in way over his head and no plan for the future. The team won five titles, but boy it was awhile before they looked like a contender again. Obviously the teams of the 70’s were beyond Lombardi’s control, but things started slipping on his watch.

Contrast that with the state of the Franchise when Ron Wolf left. He only won the one title, but the team was in position to be contender for years.

Which direction do you prefer? Thomson could die of a heart attack tonight and the team will be in position to possibly contend for years to come. He’s refused to take the ‘all in’ moves with signings and the salary cap that could immediately pay dividends and enhance his legacy.

Giant’s fans are happy guys these days. It’s been four years, but they won another title. Last year everyone wanted to stone their Coach, this year he’s a genius again. Next year, who knows how it’s going to roll for them.

No kidding. Whatcha gonna do if Cutler completes 22 passes in a row on the Packers next year?

I'm thinking this is a temporary offseason mellowing.

Probably go apeshit. Twisted Evil

One and definitely not the only one, distinction between Lombardi's time and now is the length of the draft, couple that with the lack of Free Agency and it was easier to build and maintain a team. The drafy was like 20 rounds back then, not it's seven.

While Lombardi's teams did seem to be on the decline and he seemingly may have known it as he was leaving, the system in place was oen that fostered allowing your team to age while replenishing them internally with the draft. The current system forces teams to utilize Free Agency at points in order to maintain your competitiveness.

I suppose that both systems have their advantages, but in sime ways the old way made it easier to create a so-called dynasty.

Vince Lombardi stayed with some of his veteran players longer than he should have but after the success they had he probably found it difficult to cut or trade them. Phil Bengtson was a good coach but he inherited an old team that was on the decline and he wasn't suited for GM duties.

The Finley signing just opened the door a bit F'em since they won't need the tag for him!!

The Packers would still need to free up some cash either by cutting or giving pay cuts to Clifton and Driver most likely to get the 14 million a Flynn tag would cost but the first hurdle is out of the way. To fit a Wells re-signing before FA starts AND a Flynn tag I think DD and Cliffy would have to be outright cuts to free up 10 million. Bidness is pickin up jocolor

Llike that they re-signed Da Finz. Can't wait to see the deal numbers.

Wells has to come back so tag him.

DD and Cliffy are likely gone unless they take deep cuts, gotta free up da bones.

Bidness is indeed picking up.
